What WLTP Actually Measures

WLTP is a standardized lab cycle. It is useful for comparing models under the same protocol, not for predicting your commute. Treat it as a relative benchmark, not a guarantee.

Where Real-World Range Diverges

  • Highway speed — aerodynamic drag rises roughly with the square of speed; 130 km/h can cut range dramatically versus mixed urban use.
  • Cold weather — chemistry slows and cabin heat draws from the pack unless you precondition on a charger.
  • Load and hills — passengers, cargo, and sustained climbs increase energy use; regen helps on the way down but never fully recovers what you spent.

A Simple Planning Rule

For highway trips in mild weather, start with about 70–80% of WLTP. In winter highway conditions, plan closer to 60–70%, then adjust after a few tanks of experience in your own car.
